LYNDON- Julianne Corcoran, a sophomore at Lyndon State College, has actively been involved in serving the community since her arrival in Fall 2013. The Connecticut native is currently the President of Lyndon's Society of Students in Service Together. The club is also called ASSIST.
As a young girl, Corcoran found herself working in homeless shelters, cooking shelters, and events relating to the Special Olympics. On school breaks, she still finds her way back to where her volunteering career began.
"I like to volunteer because I like to help the community," said Corcoran. "It's just great to meet so many different people that you wouldn't have met and it's always for a good cause; there's no community service project that's bad."
As part of Corcoran's presidential duties, her main responsiblity is to find students that can volunteer at different community service events in the local area. One event that has been highly advertised is the 2nd Annual H.O.P.E Color Run. The event is scheduled for 10:30am on April 25 at the Bandstand Park in Lyndonville. According to Corcoran, the event is volunteer driven and she expects better turnout this year than last.
"This year's going to be so much bigger," said Corcoran. "So hopefully people come out and donate to."
All proceeds from the run go to Helping Other People Everyday in Lyndonville.
In addition to the H.O.P.E Color Run, since coming to Lyndon, Corcoran has taken part in Habitat for Humanity projects, Rural Edge fundraisers, as well as helping senior citizens decorate for the holidays.
"I just like helping people out and getting involved in the community," Corcoran said.
Through service projects, Corcoran says she's had the opportunity to learn about stuff that she may have not been able to learn in a classroom. In addition, Corcoran has been able to make friendships that she may have never been able to make.
"Volunteering with Julianne has helped us bond and get to know each other in a different kind of setting," said Corcoran's friend, Amanda Follensbee. "I think we got so close because we are able to share positive experiences with each other, while also helping others."
Following graduation, Corcoran still hopes to be helping people in one way or another. She's currently an exercise science major with a concentrations in pre-professional physical therapy and strength and conditioning.
