ST. JOHNSBURY - The St. Johnsbury select board has appointed an interim Town Manager, but not everyone on the select board is happy about how the decision was made.
Assistant Town Manager, Dawn McPhee, is now the interim Town Manager. The decision to appoint McPhee was advised by the town's legal council, but according to Alan Ruggles, it was never discussed by the board as a whole.
Ruggles questions that everything is being handled through the select board. "I truly hope that is not the case, because that would have bigger ramifications than what we currently have," Ruggles said.
According to Ruggles, the select board agreed to listen to each other's different viewpoints, then decide on them accordingly.
Select board member, Jim Rust, said the town's legal council advised that appointing McPhee was best for the town. Rust recently said he would consider applying for Town Manager when the application process begins.
McPhee declined to comment until the contracts are completed by the council, (expected to be two weeks) and she officially assumes the interim position.
According to Ruggles, there will be an ad placed accepting applications for the permanent Town Manager position.
