A Strong Message for Smokers

smoking SAINT JOHNSBURY - Spreading the Message about Smoking.

As the American Cancer Society celebrated it's 37th Great American Smoke-out, Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital is spreading the message at how important it is to quit smoking.

NVRH tobacco coordinator Rose Sheehan says once a person stops for even one day, that will lead to more days without a cigarette.

NVRH offers weekly classes and individual counseling to smokers as well as resources such as "quit books" which contain coupons for nicotine skin patches and nicotine gum.

Sheehan wants to leave smokers with a strong message, "they can do it. It doubles their chances. It takes the average smoker seven or eight attempts before they quit for good, so often times smokers or tobacco users will feel like they failed if they tried a couple of times and they went back to it, and they didn't fail, and that's I think the most important message; that's not a failure, you just get back, you do it again and you will succeed, and we're here to help."
